Glenn Beck defends his right to fry

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

This goes back a few weeks, but it's also worth acknowledging: Glenn Beck declares

"Get away from my french fries, Mrs. Obama. First politician that comes up to me with a carrot stick, I’ve got a place for it," he said, adding: "And it’s not in my tummy.”

This continues to fascinate me. Healthy eating is unquestionably a political issue, framed as Big Government vs. individual rights. I have sympathy for the frame, but just don't get what those who apply it to this issue propose to do about a national epidemic.

If we go no farther than "stay out of my life," how is the problem going to be addressed? Saying what people should do has little effect on what people do do.

The same people are almost always national security hawks, and the obesity explosion is undeniably a national security issue: How do we staff the army when two out of three American adults are obese or overweight? It's not just me saying it; military leaders who these folks usually venerate say it too. Try here and here. What often happens is that leaders like this are venerated until they utter against the orthodoxy.

To those people I say, "Fine. We'll stay out of your kitchen." Now, what's your solution? We need a solution, right?
