And now Hillary is dead too, only it’s worse

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

I labeled a post of a couple of days ago, "John McCain is dead to me," about his asinine proposal to suspend the federal gas tax for the summer.

Dumb idea — we need the money it brings in for infrastructure repairs and suspending the tax would lead to more driving, which means more CO2 in the atmosphere. And, it's pandering, because the 18 cents a gallon is hardly going to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people.

The larger disappointment for me was that McCain's stunting was proof that he would bring no commitment to environmental change if elected.

Yesterday, Hillary Clinton said she would do the same thing, and I'm even more offended. My wife will say it's because a woman did it, and you can all add your own analysis, but it's just not so. I repeat: a feminist should be expected to judge a candidate on views, tactics, and honor, not gender.

If you really believe that Hillary believes that this is the best move for the nation, that in her role as a senator and highest-visibility public servant, she is promoting a strategy for the good of all, raise your hand. Do it in front of other people, people who's credibility you value. I dare you.

Again, again, again: This is purely political. Now she gets to say that's she's the one for lifting this gas burden off our backs, and Obama can either say "me too," or take a principled stand (which he has) against the move.

According to an AP story this morning, Clinton said, unlike McCain, she has a plan to pay for the gas tax suspension - by imposing a "windfall profits tax" on oil companies. "If we suspended it and made up the lost revenues, that's the best of both worlds," she said.

Yeah, right. Does anyone think that would pass? Does anyone think she's going to leave the campaign trail to press for this windfall tax in the Senate, in time for the summer drivers to benefit? Of course not. It's just crap, just another chance to take another shot at someone who's not as good at pandering as she is:

"My opponent, Senator Obama, opposes giving consumers a break," Clinton said, campaigning in North Carolina. Is that really what she thinks? Or is it an easy cheap shot by having taken the strategic high ground while once again skirting the moral high ground?

Self-serving crap, and never a whit of leadership. That's what we'll get from Hillary.
